Easter III (or IV): More Settings of Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul.

He leads me in the paths of righteousness
for His name sake.

Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,

for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;

You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me
all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

  1. I did my MCM thesis at CURF on Psalm settings. I made an annotated index of over 1,400 musical settings that were in print in 1997. Psalm 23 is one of the biggest files!

  2. I can only imagine there was a lot of material on this psalm!

    The one I couldn't find is "A Faithful Shepherd Is My Lord." It is a favorite of my home congregation. It has the awesome open fifth in the refrain (dividing the bass parts). I don't know the composer, so the search results were pretty sparse.
